Data Analyzing Artificial Intelligence (AI) Goodmorning everyone, Today we are talking about our final thesis projects and from two weeks ago I noticed everyone has interesting topics that seem all unique. I’ll start talking about mine. What’s my thesis? What am I wanting to discover? I will data analyze the change in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and analyze the texts in the New York Times to observe whether the media and the actual works of AI are consistent and inconsistent in different areas. November 29th, 2017 Jo Kwon

Why Artificial Intelligence? Everywhere! Topics in Classes Text Analysis Why AI? Why did I choose this topic? First, AI is everywhere in our lives. It’s embedded in objects and services that we use. Second, it’s a topic frequently mentioned in class including this class and physical computing and many others. Lastly, it’s related to text analysis. AI is being used for text analysis. AI uses natural language processing (nlp) to understand the meaning of words. Using nlp and text analysis allow AI to work as chatbots in services such as Facebook Messenger.

Why This time Frame? I chose to look in the period between 2006 to 2016. In order to explain why I chose this time frame, I will briefly talk about chatbots. What is a chatbot? It’s a computer program designed to simulate conversation with human users, especially over the internet. The beginning of chatbots traces back to Alan Turing’s test in 1950. It’s a long history so I had to choose a period of time. In 2011, Apple introduced the new Eliza version in its service which is the “Siri”. This is a milestone for chatbots. Observing the previous and the after years of 2011 seems necessary. 2006 ~2016

Why The New York Times (NYT) as “the Medium”? The next question is why the New York Times? The New York Times was founded in 1851 and has expanded over centuries. In 2016, it had the largest combined print-and-digital circulation of any daily newspaper in the United States. In July 2017, 2.3 million digital-only subscriptions were made and 407 million revenues. It has a great readership in the United States’ which is influencing the society overall. Using the NYT as the medium to observe how AI is portrayed is suitable.

Why the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) Web of Science as the “Actual Works of AI”? Why use the Institute for scientific information Web of Science as “actual works of AI” ? It’s an online subscription based scientific citation indexing service which has a citation search to research papers in academics.145 million records including journals, books, and proceedings exist with 7.2 million data sets. Searches with controlled vocabulary and other features are sophisticated for finding the exact records related to AI. Citation network links are provided which is also crucial for my project.

Why Text Analysis? Who Did Text analysis? Why text analysis? The NYT and Web of Science are all in text. Text analysis allows distant reading to look at the bigger picture to discover the patterns and changes over time and how they correlate. Who did text analysis that inspired me? Gómez-Barroso in his research of “The evolution of the telecommunications policy agenda: Forty years of articles in Telecommunications Policy” uses text mining techniques to identify key topics, the dominant combinations of concepts and main areas of research in the field.

What is my thesis structure? Literature review of the history of chatbots (Artificial Intelligence) Methodology Identification of the changes in AI and how it differs from the media Visualization Results Conclusion and brief prediction What is my thesis structure? 1 Literature review of the history of chatbots (Artificial Intelligence) 2 Methodology 3 Identification of the changes in AI and how it differs from the media 4 Visualization Results 5 Conclusion and brief prediction

Time Schedule For The project Create an AI query from Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) Web of Science Testing the query Collecting the texts from ISI Web of Science Collecting the texts from the NYT Analyzing the results (document clustering, topic modeling) Word clouds (data visualization) Creating interactive graphics with p5.js with the results (data visualization) This is my order of research Create an AI query from Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) Web of Science Testing the query Collecting the texts from ISI Web of Science Collecting the texts from the NYT Analyzing the results (document clustering, topic modeling) Word clouds (data visualization) Creating interactive graphics with p5.js with the results (data visualization)

So I’ve talked about my thesis which is data analyzing the change in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and analyzing the media and the actual works of AI are consistent and inconsistent in different areas. I hope you understand my purpose of research better now. Thank you for listening.
