 A few good examples will help you understand the ‘R’ of conservation.  This story from Buddha’s teachings illustrates how recycling and reusing were once a part of our tradition.  How do we conserve our resources, or stop them from getting degraded or destroyed?

HHow do we conserve our resources, or stop them from getting degraded or destroyed? NNaturally we cannot stop using natural resources but we can use less and stop wasting. Remembering three words that start with ‘R’ would be helpful in this context. ((1) Reduce the use of natural resources. ((2) Reuse things rather than throw them away. ((3)Recycle the materials

 A few good examples will help you understand the ‘R’ of conservation. Suppose you have a good pair of shoes but you feel like buying another pair.  (1) If you can remember the resources needed to make and package a pair of shoes and stop yourself from buying another pair, you will be reducing the use of natural resources.  (2)You can reuse paper that has print or writing on only one side, give your old toys, books and clothes to someone who can use them, and so on.  (3)You can sell old newspapers, magazines, glass bottles, tins and so on, to the kabadiwallah so that they can be recycled. Paper, cloth, metals, glass and some kinds of plastic can be recycled.

 T This story from Buddha’s teachings illustrates how recycling and reusing were once a part of our tradition.  TThe queen consort of King Udayana once gave 500 clothes to Ananda, the favourite disciple of Buddha. When the king asked Ananda what he would do with the garments, Ananda replied, “OH King, many of the brothers (monks) are in rags. I am going to distribute the garments among them.” QQ= What will you do with the old garements? AA=We will make bed covers out of them.
