Fat Cell Development in Obesity Are you pleased with your body weight? Why do people accumulate too much fat? Despite being a country that is preoccupied with body image and weight loss, obesity continues to rise. One of the goals of Healthy People 2010 is to increase the proportion of adults who are at a healthy weight and to reduce the proportion of adults who are obese. This slide shows what we know about fat cells. During growth, fat cells increase in number. When you eat more than you use in energy, the fat cells increase in size. (Fat cells can increase their size by 20-fold.) When the fat cells reach their maximum size, but energy intake continues to be more than energy expenditure, fat cells increase in number again. (Fat cells can increase their number by several thousand-fold.) Then with fat loss, the size of the fat cells shrinks, but not the number. A tip is to not to let your clothes get too tight. The average adult between 25 and 55, gains ½ pound per year. At that rate you would gain 15 pounds and increase your pant size from a size 10 to a 14. (Show glob of fat!) (Show pant sizes!)
