Energy Types Objectives 22 September, 2018 Energy Types Objectives Be able to recall the different types of energy and how energy can be transferred and transformed. HSW: AF3: Select appropriate methods for presenting scientific data. Used before in: Will use again in: Lesson 2 – Energy Transformations PLTS: Independent enquirers: support conclusions, using reasoned arguments and evidence. Will use again in: Keywords Energy types: GPE, Chemical, Elastic (strain), Kinetic, Nuclear, Thermal, Sound, Light (Radiation), Electrical, Energy resources, Transfer, Transformation

Outcomes All students should be able to: Recall 9 types of energy. Most students should be able to: Describe how energy types are different from energy resources. Describe how energy can be transferred from one thing to another. Some students should be able to: Draw energy transfer diagrams to describe energy transfers and transformations and know that energy can be useful or wasted.

Useful energy transfers

Electricity Light + Heat + Sound Energy changes To describe an energy change for a light bulb we need to do 3 steps: This is an energy transfer diagram: 1) Write down the starting energy: 3) Write down what energy types are given out: 2) Draw an arrow Electricity Light + Heat + Sound What are the energy changes for the following…? An electric fire A rock about to drop An arrow about to be fired Extension: Label the useful and wasted energy types.

Practical Time Energy Circus Draw a labelled diagram of the equipment. For each system draw an energy transfer diagram. Label the useful and wasted energy types. Extension Copy: Energy can be transferred from one thing to another. Energy can be transformed from one type to another. Now: Write down an example of energy being transferred from one thing to another. Write down an example of energy being transformed from one type to another.

Plenary The Big Q: The Switches Riddle There are 3 switches outside a room, 1 of them turns on a light inside the room. You can switch the switches as much as you like but you can only open the door to check once. How do you know which one switches the light on? All: Write down the 9 types of energy and circle the ones that will be involved here. Most: Draw the energy flow diagram for a lightbulb. Some: Describe the useful and wasted energy and explain how this helps you solve the riddle. PLTS: support your conclusion with evidence
