Saving Images from Fireworks Your Fireworks files must be saved in a Web supported format in order for them to be visible in a Web browser. For most graphics that you include on Web pages, you should use the JPEG and GIF Formats. Fireworks enables you to save your graphic files in the following formats: BMP is a common file format used to display bitmap images. BMPs are used primarily on the Windows operating system. GIF is a popular Web format because it typically creates files that are small in size and supported by most browsers. GIF files can contain a maximum of 256 colors, but they can also contain a transparent area and frames for animation, which makes them a flexible format for Web use. JPEG was developed by the Joint Photographic Experts Group and is the best format for scanned photographs, images using textures, gradients, or graphics requiring a greater range of hues than 256 colors allows. PICT is a graphic file format used only on Macintosh systems. PNG (Portable Network Graphics) can support up to 32-bit color, and includes a transparent area. PNG is the default file format for graphics you create in Fireworks; however, not all Web browsers can display PNG graphics. TIFF (Tagged Image File Format) is most commonly used in print publishing and isn’t used on the Web. WBMP (Wireless Bitmap) is an output format created for mobile computing devices. Saving Images from Fireworks Even though GIF files can contain a maximum of 256 colors, if your image doesn’t use the full range of colors available, you can optimize your image by selecting a palette that reflects the colors used in the graphic. You can choose the palette you want to use for output by choosing the Indexed Palette list in the Optimize panel. The Remove Unused Colors option on the Optimize panel option menu is available only if you have selected an 8-bit output format such as GIF. The Remove Unused Colors option is a toggle. Web Adaptive is a palette in which colors that are close to Web safe colors are converted to the closest Web safe colors. Web 216 is a palette of the 216 colors common to both Windows and Macintosh computers. Exact contains the exact colors used in the image. Macintosh contains the 256 colors defined by Macintosh. Windows contains the 256 colors defined by Windows. Grayscale is a palette of 256 or fewer shades of gray. Black and White is a two-color palette consisting of only Black and White. Uniform is a mathematical palette based on RGB pixel values. Choose the Right Number of Colors Fireworks stores information about the selected color palette in the file when you save an 8-bit image file. The Remove Unused Color option on the Optimize panel options menu is available only if you have selected an 8-bit output format such as GIF. The remove Unused Colors option is a toggle. Use the Color Palette The Optimize panel shows either the colors that are currently in use or the colors that are in the selected palette. You can click the Edit color button to change a color in the palette. If you change a color, Fireworks uses the changed color in place of the original color throughout the image.
