ESSAY TERMS WHAT IS METER?

WHAT IS AN ESSAY? WHAT IS METER? a piece of writing that expresses the point of view of the author Every essay has three main parts: Introduction Body Conclusion

THINK OF A CHEESEBURGER! Many essays you will write in highschool will further divide this THREE part structure into a five paragraph essay WHAT IS METER? THINK OF A CHEESEBURGER! INTRODUCTORY PARAGRAPH FIRST SUPPORTING PARAGRAPH SECOND SUPPORTING PARAGRAPH THIRD SUPPORTING PARAGRAPH CONCLUDING PARAGRAPH

FICTION is prose in which the characters and events are imaginary. WHAT IS METER? FICTION is prose in which the characters and events are imaginary. NON-FICTION is prose based on facts, real events, and real people.

NARRATIVE ESSAYS: Tell a story Can be FICTION or NON-FICTION WHAT IS METER? Tell a story Can be FICTION or NON-FICTION Have a beginning, middle, and end Have plot, setting, characters and conflict Are organized CHRONOLOGICALLY

EXPOSITORY ESSAYS: Explain HOW or WHY something happens WHAT IS METER? Explain HOW or WHY something happens Involve presenting or summarizing facts about an event, issue, process, or topic Don't normally contain the author's opinions (if they ARE included, they're supported by facts)

DESCRIPTIVE ESSAYS: Describe a person, place, thing, or event WHAT IS METER? Describe a person, place, thing, or event Rely heavily on IMAGERY Use various examples of figurative language like SIMILES and METAPHORS

PERSUASIVE ESSAYS: WHAT IS METER? Attempt to convince the reader to support a point of view or act in support of an idea or cause Express the author's position on the subject in the form of a THESIS STATEMENT. Contain carefully thought out and well-supported arguments that are arranged in the most convincing order.

PERSUASION VS. ARGUMENTATION WHAT IS METER? Although they are similar, PERSUASIVE ESSAYS differ from ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAYS in that they normally contain a CALL TO ACTION that encourages the reader to change his or her attitude / behaviour. PERSUASIVE ESSAYS also make an emotional appeal to the reader's feelings, whereas ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAYS tend to be more OBJECTIVE.

REFLECTIVE ESSAYS: Are sometimes referred to as PERSONAL ESSAYS WHAT IS METER? Are sometimes referred to as PERSONAL ESSAYS Are written in first person point of view Explore an idea, opinion or insight about the world

BIOGRAPHIES: Are an account of someone's life written by someone else WHAT IS METER? Are an account of someone's life written by someone else Are written in third person point of view Involve authors who have either interviewed or researched subject Are written chronologically Events chosen reveal something about the personality or life of the subject

AUTOBIOGRAPHIES: WHAT IS METER? Are written accounts of the life of a person written by that person Are written in first person point of view Discuss important people, places, phases, and events of a person's life Reveal something about the person's feelings, values and ambitions Are written chronologically

OTHER TERMS: WHAT IS METER? THESIS: The position or argument the author is trying to defend. FACT:A statement that can be proven true. OPINION:A statement that cannot be proven true; reflects bias and beliefs of the author.

OTHER TERMS: WHAT IS METER? OBJECTIVE: not influenced by personal feelings or opinions in considering and representing facts. SUBJECTIVE: based on or influenced by personal feelings, tastes, or opinions.

OTHER TERMS: WHAT IS METER? FORMAL: Usually objective writing that deals with more serious ideas and topics. INFORMAL: Writing with the quality of everyday conversation that reveals a great deal of the author's personality.

OTHER TERMS: WHAT IS METER? PARAGRAPH: A group of sentences relating to a single idea or topic. TOPIC SENTENCE: The sentence that expresses the main idea of a paragraph.

OTHER TERMS: WHAT IS METER? COHERENCE: A clear, logical flow in writing with smooth transitions between sentences and paragraphs.

OTHER TERMS: WHAT IS METER? UNITY: A quality of writing in which all sentences support one main idea.

OTHER TERMS: WHAT IS METER? TONE: The attitude of the author as revealed by his or her diction.
