What is Motion?

Motion is an event that involves a change in the position or location of something.

How is motion described? Motion is described in terms of speed, velocity, and acceleration.

Speed Speed is a comparison of time and distance. Speed is expressed as distance traveled per unit time, for example miles per hour.

How do I find speed? Speed is calculated using the following formula: Speed is equal to Distance divided by Time. The formula can be rearranged to solve for different variables. S = d / t T = d / s D = s x t D S T

Constant Speed Speed that does not change

So, exactly what is Velocity?

Velocity Speed AND direction If my SPEED is 25 m/sec and I am traveling south, my VELOCITY is 25 m/sec south

What is Acceleration?

You may think that Acceleration means speeding up, but…

Acceleration is a change in velocity (speed or direction) Acceleration is caused by unbalanced forces There are many ways to accelerate…

Positive acceleration Types of Acceleration Speeding up Positive acceleration

Negative acceleration Types of Acceleration Slowing down Negative acceleration Slowing down Negative acceleration

Types of Acceleration Stopping

Changing direction (turning) Types of Acceleration Changing direction (turning)

How do you calculate Acceleration? (Final Speed – Initial Speed) Time Unit of measurement = m/s2
