1 How to Describe & Recognize Motion

2 What is Motion? An object is in Motion when its distance from another object changes An object is in Motion if its position changes relative to another object, or a reference point

3 What is a Reference Point?
A place or object used for comparison to determine if something is in motion Reference Points are stationary, meaning they do not move. Ex: Tree or a Building

4 time Calculating Speed
Speed is the distance an object travels in a given unit of time Speed = distance time (Rate of change in position)

5 To find the Average Speed divide the total distance by the total time
If the speed of an object does not change, the object is traveling at constant speed (Most objects do not move at constant speeds for long) To find the Average Speed divide the total distance by the total time

6 What is Velocity? Velocity is speed in a given direction
When you know the speed & direction of an object’s motion, you can determine velocity Ex. 15 km/hr Westward

7 What is Acceleration? Acceleration is the rate at which velocity changes In Science Acceleration refers to Increasing Speed Decreasing Speed Changing Direction

8 Acceleration Graph

9 STOP =) Complete the 4 speed calculations in your notebook.
Write the equation and solve Use the units you are given

10 Measuring Distance The basic unit of length or distance is the meter
1 cm = _________ m 1 mm = __________ m 1 km = __________ m 5 m = __________ cm

11 Practice Problems time
Work with a partner to complete the speed calculations at you lab table. Write out the equation and solve each problem in your notebook. Speed = distance time

12 What is the speed of a person that walked 247km in 60mins?
What is the speed of a train that took 2hrs to travel 192km? A car covered 1500km in 1 day. What is the speed of the car in m/hr? A plane traveled 1154 miles in a hour and a half. What was the speed?
