Invent a fifth season. Give it a name and describe it. When writing to describe, use techniques effectively to create a powerful image in the readers’ minds. To do this, use the five senses and AFOREST to make the description more engaging and effective. Choose Chapter 5: Language

Gothic Translation

The Castle of Otranto Annotate the different techniques used: AFOREST Simple, compound and complex sentences Declaratives, imperatives, interrogatives and exclamatives Why has this language been chosen? What atmosphere is created through the use of this language?

Gothic Jack & Gothic Jill Jack and Jill went up the hill To fetch a pail of water. Jack fell down and broke his crown, And Jill came tumbling after. Jack and Jill edged carefully towards the top of the gloomy hill. Its steepest point was shrouded in mist, making it almost impossible to see the ruined monastery that was situated somewhat precariously at the top. They dared not look down, for the ground seemed to have been swallowed up by the brambles below, thorns like fingers reaching towards them as if desperate to pull them towards their craggy graves. How has the story changed? What language is used to create the gothic atmosphere?

Changing Genres In groups, change your given nursery rhyme so that it is written in the gothic genre: Group 1: ‘Hickory, Dickory Dock’ Group 2: ‘Humpty Dumpty’ Group 3: ‘Itsy Bitsy Spider’ Group 4: ‘Hush a bye baby’ Group 5: ‘Little Miss Muffet’

Question 5 Mock Write a description suggested by the image Or: Write the opening of a story about the castle in the image. Spend 45 minutes writing
