Presentation transcript:

Fascioliasis is a foodborne trematode infection caused by Fasciola Hepatica and Fasciola Gigantica.

The life cycle of the worm involves a carrier, an intermediate host, and a final host.

Fascioliasis has three different phases in the final host. Symptomless Incubation Phase (a few days to a few months) Acute Phase (2 to 4 months) Chronic Phase

Although fascioliasis is found worldwide, it is most prevalent in the Andean region (especially Bolivia and Peru), South-East Asia, and Western Europe.

Diagnosis of Fascioliasis can be done by examination of stool samples or by immunological techniques such as a Western Blot or an Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA).

Although the precise mechanism of Triclabendazole is unknown, we know that it disrupts micro-tubule based processes by binding to the β-tubulin molecule.

A study done in Vietnam showed that the antimalarial drug Artesunate may have a role in treating fascioliasis.
