KB: digitisation and cooperation in the Netherlands Hans Jansen, Deputy Director General March 10, 2011

Our mission The KB is the national library of the Netherlands: we bring people and information together Our core values are: accessibility, sustainability, innovation and cooperation

Our vision We offer everyone everywhere access to everything published in and about the Netherlands We play a central role in the (scientific) information infrastructure of the Netherlands We promote permanent access to digital information nationally and internationally

Strategic priorities for 2025 We have digitised all Dutch books, newspapers and periodicals from 1470 We offer permanent access to all digital (& digitised) publications that are published in the Netherlands We offer complete and site independent access to licensed content for members of Dutch scientific [beter: academic of research] and public libraries

Digitisation targets for 2014 (1) 10% of all Dutch books, newspapers and periodicals have been digitised (60 million pages by the KB, 13 million by third parties) Access to results from current digitisation projects for newspapers, journals, pre-1900 books, parliamentary papers Digitisation within National Programmes like Metamorfoze and Memory of the Netherlands will continue The KB seeks opportunities to cooperate with private partners for digitisation, e.g. Google, ProQuest

Digitisation targets for 2014 (2) Why these? These collections are most requested and used by research and general public These collections are threatened by paper decay Public funding was available Private funders were interested

How to collaborate with public libraries? KB changes into a business to business (B2B) organisation provides metadata and digital content provides licensed content Two examples: Selected public library users are offered direct access to licensed content from KB Selected Elsevier content for public library users
