Order of Operations
What does order of operations mean? Order of operations is the order in which you solve a math problem with many components. The first rule of order of operations is P.E.M.D.A.S. Don’t forget to solve the problem from left to right!

Parentheses The first step of the order of operations is parentheses. Ex. (3 x 6) = 18 Ex. (3 x 6) + 2 = 20 á 18 + 2 = 20
Exponents The second step of the order of operations is exponents. á 52 = 25 Ex. 3 + (3 + 2)2 = 28 á 3 + 25 = 28
Multiplication The third step of the order of operations is multiplication. Ex. 6 x 4 = 24 Ex. (3-2)2 x 4 = 4 á 1 x 4 = 4
Division The fourth step of the order of operations is division. Ex. 8 ÷ 2 = 4 Ex. 8 ÷ 2 + (3 x 6) = 22 á 4 + 18 = 22
Addition The fifth step of the order of operations is addition. Ex. 3 + 6 = 9 Ex. 3 + 4 ÷ 2 = 4 á 3 + 2 = 4
Subtraction The last step of the order of operations is subtraction. Ex. 16 – 4 = 12 Ex. 18 – (2 + 2)2 = 2 á 18 - 16 = 2
