Workforce Engagement in Safety Survey communications pack

 What is the Workforce Engagement in Safety Survey? What will happen with the results?  What do I have to do? Can I trust the process?

CREATING AN ENGAGED WORKFORCE The survey is being conducted to improve Workforce Engagement at this worksite. Workforce engagement is the active participation of everyone in the workforce in the management and improvement of safety. When engaged, workers feel as able as managers to improve safety where they work. Workforce Engagement therefore means we all participate in and challenge how safety is managed here. As the image shows, Workforce Engagement is created within a cycle. It doesn’t just happen overnight.

DEVELOPING WORKFORCE ENGAGEMENT IN SAFETY IS A JOURNEY Workforce disengaged with the safety effort Workforce partially engaged with the safety effort Workforce routinely engaged with the safety effort Workforce and management working in partnership to improve safety Level 5 Level 4 Workforce leading the safety improvement effort Level 3 Level 2 Despite great improvements in the safety performance of the Oil & Gas Industry have been made over the last 20 years, a fully engaged workforce is not yet the norm in our industry. It is one of the most effective active barriers against incidents and accidents for an organisation to have, which is why we are focussing on it now. Like any improvement in our industry, developing workforce engagement takes time. We – look other sites – are already some way along this journey. The Workforce Engagement Survey will help us understand exactly where we are. Level 1

HOW WE WILL IMPROVE WORKFORCE ENGAGEMENT Workforce Engagement increases when more positive engagement behaviours are performed and obstacles to engagement are removed. When engaged, all workers feel as able as managers to improve safety where they work. Everyone participates in and challenges how safety is managed.

THE WORKORCE ENGAGEMENT SURVEY WILL HELP US UNDERSTAND BEHAVIOURS AND OBSTACLES HERE The Workforce Engagement Survey therefore asks about your views of a range of behaviours and obstacles – to ensure we share a clear understanding of these. The survey does NOT ask about everything to do with safety – it is only focussed on those things which are known to impact on Workforce Engagement. It is an industry standard survey, meaning that all Step Change in Safety members will participate in it and the data is analysed by Step Change in Safety. It is not a company survey.

Why is this survey being conducted? What will happen with the results?  What do I have to do? Can I trust the process?

OVER THE NEXT TWO MONTHS, EVERYONE WILL BE INVITED TO PARTICIPATE IN A SURVEY All workers on the site are being invited to participate in the survey. This is because all workers on the site impact on safety, regardless of exactly who they work for.

THE SURVEY IS FOUR PAGES LONG

IT ASKS ABOUT THE THINGS THAT ENGAGE PEOPLE IN MANAGING AND WORKING SAFELY

AT THIS WORKSITE, WE WILL COMPLETE IT IN SMALL GROUPS

Your job and your direct supervisor Working in your team IT HAS FIVE SECTIONS Your job and your direct supervisor Working in your team Overall experiences at your worksite In summary Background questions For most of the survey, you will be presented with a series of statements and asked to respond on a scale from 1-5. The scales can change throughout the survey, so please make sure you read the scale before responding to the questions.

AND USUALLY TAKES 10 – 15 MINUTES TO COMPLETE You may not have a strong view about all of the questions, but please try not to skip any. The survey is most accurate when you complete all questions, even if you are not 100% sure of all of every response. I will be here to answer any questions you may have about the survey.

Why is this survey being conducted? What will happen with the results?  What do I have to do? Can I trust the process?

YES.

AN INDUSTRY SURVEY FOCUSSED ON WORKSITE – NOT DESIGNED TO FOCUS ON INDIVIDUAL VIEWS Your responses to the Workforce Engagement Survey are confidential and will only be seen by Step Change in Safety and Atlas Knowledge (who are analysing the data for Step Change in Safety). As mentioned before, this is not a company survey. All responses are collated and analysed but individual responses are not reported. There is no need to include any identifying information on your survey. comments is removed before being included in any reports. Your feedback is combined with other people to determine the views held across different groups in the workforce.   The final section of the survey does include some background questions about your. These details are collected to see if there are any differences between different groups of people. These details won’t be used to identify anyone. It’s a legal requirement for Step Change in Safety to maintain your confidentiality.

Why is this survey being conducted? What will happen with the results?  What do I have to do? Can I trust the process?

YOU WILL RECEIVE FEEDBACK ABOUT THE RESULTS Two weeks after the end of the survey process, a worksite report will be produced for this worksite. This report will be shared with the OIM (or appropriate person), who will share the results with the workforce.
