Reviewing Short Story Elements for “Eleven”
Presentation transcript:

Eleven Sandra Cisneros Clearly, eleven is a significant number, as the author has chosen it for her title.

Précis In Sandra Cisneros’ short story, “Eleven”, she asserts…

Point of View Voice Narrator Sandra Cisneros crafts the story utilizing a narrator, Rachel, who tells the story from first person point of view. Rachel is an effective narrator because the reader more easily identifies and empathizes with her experiences. We believe that an eleven year old girl is sharing her story. Quote: “But the worst part is right before the bell rings for lunch. That stupid Phyllis Lopez, who is even dumber than Sylvia Saldivar, says she remembers the red sweater is hers!” Analysis: Illustrating the voice of an eleven-year-old, Cisneros incorporates the words “dumber” and “stupid” into Rachel’s vocabulary in order for her to describe the girls who have been intentionally or unintentionally mean.
