Cabinet materials Wood Cabinets Most popular choice of material for kitchen cabinets but expensive. Pine is the most economical choice but it is the softest of the wood kitchen cabinet options and so easily show wear and tear. Maple is now the most popular, followed closely by Birch.

Wood Veneers substitute the look of wood. a really thin sheet of wood that is glued over plywood. Cheaper than wood. Not solid or long lasting as wood.

Melamine This is made from a mixture of resin, paper and pressed wood. Melamine is a versatile material for kitchen cabinets in that it is available in many different colors and hues and different surface finishes. This material is not as durable as the laminate cabinets and it costs less.

Laminates This is produced by heat sealing layers of resin soaked paper together to create a really durable material. This is flexible to use in that it can be pre-colored and given a texture. This is a stronger and more expensive option than melamine.

PVC PVC is a durable material made up of wood fibres covered with a sheet of PVC. Is tougher than both laminates and melamine. Cheap but does not available in many colors and finishes.

Glass brings brightness to kitchens by reflecting natural light. Glass shelving makes the room feel larger. Glass can be used as shelving or inlaid in cabinet doors. Colored glass, frosted, tinted glass, beveled glass etc. can be used. Prepared by: Joshima V.M.

Laquered Laquered effect is applied to normal MDF in a way that results in many color options and finishes. Gives an ultra modern look . They chip quite easily and are prone to yellowing over time.

Stainless Steel stainless steel kitchen cabinet and counter products are not affected by changes in temperatures or condensation. Recently used in household kitchen as stainless steel kitchen island extractor hoods. A layer of stainless steel is usually applied over an MDF base to give the kitchen cabinet and counter more strength.

Kitchen counter materials Granite Granite is the number one material choice for kitchen counter tops. Granite is available in color tones to match any kitchen style. Granite isn't effected by hot pans. Yearly application of a non-yellowing paste wax will help maintain the brightness and sheen of the surface. Resist scratches or staining like many other kitchen counter surfaces

Concrete Concrete is being more widely used mainly because it can be molded to any shape and tinted to any color. It is durable but porous and absorbs moister. Cleaning becomes difficult in meantime.

Patterned Formica It is a type of laminate. Easy to look after and durable. It is resistant to water and staining so maintains it's matte or polished look.

Glass It reflects light around the room Is very hygenic, non porous and easy to clean But not guaranteed to withstand really hot pots placed directly on the surface .

Stainless steel Stainless steel kitchen counters are mostly used in commercial kitchens. They are durable, easy to clean and hygienic.
