Pluto By: Mrs. Trumphour

Location At one time Pluto was considered one of the main planets. In 2006 it was reclassified as a DWARF PLANET. Pluto is in the OUTER area of our Solar System. Pluto is 9th from the Sun.

Composition Pluto is comprised of different GASES: Methane Nitrogen Carbon monoxide Gassy ice

Physical characteristics Pluto is the largest known dwarf planet. Pluto has mountains much like Earth’s Rocky Mountains. Pluto has icy plains. Pluto has a reddish tint.

Weather Pluto experiences freezing cold temperatures! Pluto’s average temperature is -380° F. Scientists have recently discovered hazy clouds in Pluto’s atmosphere!

Orbits It takes Pluto 248 years to orbit the Sun.

Pluto’s moons Pluto has 5 moons: Charon Styx Nix Kerberos Hydra

Rotation A rotation on Pluto takes 6.4 Earth days 6 days, 9 hours, and 36 minutes

Interesting facts Pluto was first discovered in 1930 Pluto got its name from an 11-year-old Venetia Burney of Oxford, England, who suggested to her grandfather that the new world get its name from the Roman god of the underworld. Her grandfather then passed the name on to Lowell Observatory. The name also honors Percival Lowell, whose initials are the first two letters of Pluto.
