Organs and organ systems

Learning goals We are learning to explain the makeup of organs. We are learning to identify common organ systems of the body. We are learning the functions of the organ systems of the body.

What we know … Different tissues perform unique, individual functions Like specialized cells, they can only do so much on their own

What is an organ? Different tissues working together to perform a specific task Organs contain at least two different types of tissues

examples Brain – controls all body activities Heart – pumps blood through the body Kidneys – produce urine by filtering wastes and excess water from blood Stomach – churns and digests food

Organ systems A group of organs that interact with each other to perform a common task.

Circulatory system Transports blood, nutrients, gases and wastes

Digestive system Takes in food and breaks it down Absorbs nutrients Removes solid waste from the body

Respiratory system Controls breathing Exchanges gases in lungs

Immune system Defends the body against infections

Muscular system Works with the bones to move parts of the body

Excretory system Removes liquid wastes from the body

Nervous system Detects changes in the environment Signals these changes to the body Causes body to respond

Reproductive system Includes reproductive organs for producing offspring

Skeletal system Supports, protects and works with muscles to move parts of the body

Learning goals We are learning to explain the makeup of organs. We are learning to identify common organ systems of the body. We are learning the functions of the organ systems of the body.

Please complete What is an organ? What function do the circulatory and respiratory systems work together to perform? Identify three other examples of organ systems working together to perform a certain function. Explain how they do this. Name 5 important organs (not the brain, heart, kidney, or stomach) in our body. In your own words, describe the function of each. What system delivers nutrients to the blood? What system delivers nutrients to the cells of the body? What system protects the body from foreign invaders? What system informs you to stop touching a hot pan? What are the major organs of each of the organs systems discussed in this note?
