Happisburgh Primary and Early Years School KS1 and KS2 SATS 2018 Y2 and Y6 Information meeting Thursday 18th January

What are SATs? SATs are Statutory Assessment Tests which children must complete in Year 2 and Year 6. The children will complete tests for Reading, GPS and Mathematics. Year 6 also complete a spelling test. The SATs test are in line with the National Curriculum - this is more rigorous and sets higher expectations upon children than the previous curriculum. In KS1 the test supports the teacher assessments. The KS1 SATs this year will be throughout May. Y6 SATS are the week of the 14th May KS2 SATS - May 2011

KS1 Tests KS2 SATS - May 2011

Reading Test Paper 1 is much easier than Paper 2 - in Paper 1 the questions are under each short section of text, whilst in paper 2 the text is in a separate booklet to the questions. The texts will cover a range of poetry, fiction and non-fiction. Questions are designed to assess the comprehension and understanding of a child’s reading. Some questions are multiple choice or selected response, others require short answers and some require an extended response or explanation. The children must read these independently. KS2 SATS - May 2011

Paper 2 KS2 SATS - May 2011

Reading Test Questions Inference Word meaning KS2 SATS - May 2011

Grammar and punctuation test. It consists of a range of question styles. KS2 SATS - May 2011

Maths tests Children will sit two tests: Paper 1 and Paper 2: Paper 1 is for arithmetic, lasting approximately 25 minutes and worth 25 marks. It covers calculation methods for all operations. No resources can be used, e.g. no number square, number line, etc. Paper 2 covers problem solving, reasoning and mathematical fluency, lasts for approximately 35 minutes and is worth 35 marks. The only resource the children can use is a 30cm ruler. Pupils will still require calculation skills and questions will be varied including multiple choice, matching, true/false, completing a chart or table or drawing a shape. Some questions will also require children to show or explain their working out. KS2 SATS - May 2011

Maths Paper 2: Reasoning KS2 SATS - May 2011

The Results Results are reported to the Local Authority. An overall result will be made available with yearly reports.

What can you do to help? Look at the sample tests with your child. Practise similar style questions. Note any areas your child finds difficult and focus on these.

CGP booklets We have ordered the CGP study books to work through with your child.

What else can you do to help? First and foremost, support and reassure your child that there is nothing to worry about and that they should always just try their best. Praise and encourage! Ensure your child has the best possible attendance at school. Support your child with any homework tasks. Reading, spelling and arithmetic (e.g. times tables) are always good to practise. Talk to your child about what they have learnt at school and what book(s) they are reading (the character, the plot, their opinion). Make sure your child has a good sleep and healthy breakfast every morning!

Key Stage 2 SATS The new national curriculum was assessed for the first time in May 2016. We will apply for extra time for your child to complete the test if they meet the criteria.   This year’s key stage 2 tests are timetabled from Monday 14th May to Thursday 17 May 2018. The new curriculum was introduced in 2014. It is more rigorous and sets higher expectations which all schools are working hard to meet. Must mentioon the tree

Test results Scaled Scores All test outcomes at both KS1 and KS2 will be reported as scaled scores. The national standard will be 100. Raw scores (the number of marks awarded for each subject) will be translated to scaled scores (a comparable score for each subject) using a conversion table. Pupils will receive a raw score, a scaled score and confirmation of attainment of the national standard. Show scaled score conversion chart

A Teacher Assessment of writing ability will be made in May/June 2018. The English Tests There is a greater focus on fictional texts. . There is an emphasis on the comprehension elements of the new curriculum. Reading - 50 marks Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling Test – 50 marks - Spelling test – 20 words A Teacher Assessment of writing ability will be made in May/June 2018.

Reading Test The Reading Test For this test there will be one reading book and one answer booklet. The test will last for one hour (including reading time). There will be a total of 50 marks available. There will be a range of texts which may include fiction, non fiction and poetry. Marks will be awarded as follows: Multiple choice or other selected responses: 10% - 30% Short responses: 40% - 60% Extended responses: 20% - 40%

Reading Some questions will test the children on their understanding of vocabulary.

(We will send home examples of SATS based questions this term.) Others will require the children to deduce answers by using words or phrases as evidence. (We will send home examples of SATS based questions this term.)

Some questions will ask the children to find literal answers from the texts.

Grammar and Punctuation Changes to the Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling Test: There is a greater focus on knowing and applying grammatical terminology with the full range of punctuation tested. Technical terms in grammar will be tested. There will be one test paper for grammar, punctuation and vocabulary and one test paper for spelling. The design of the tests is unchanged. The grammar test will last for one hour and there will be a total of 50 marks available. In the grammar test, two thirds of the marks will be for multiple choice questions. The remaining questions will require pupils to write a longer answer.

How to help your child Ensure your child has the best possible attendance through the year. Encourage them to speak to us about any difficulties with class work or homework. It is essential to keep reading regularly and to have opportunities to answer questions about reading. Keep up the times table practise, so they don`t become rusty. Support the children with learning the Year 3,4,5,6 spellings. They will not be at age expectation in writing if they cannot spell these. Make sure your child completes the SATS practice papers that we send home. Make sure they attend the SATS Booster classes after school and complete the required reading and comprehension before each session. During SATS week, they can come into school early and have breakfast with their friends to hopefully calm their nerves. Make sure they bring water and snacks in during that week. Make sure they have a good nights sleep and go to bed at a reasonable time.

Revision Books 10 minute tests will be available and the school has purchased some work books for your children.. Please avoid using actual SATS tests for practise!

Thank you for your support! Any questions? KS2 SATS - May 2011
