What do all of the pictures have in common?

Animal Identification

Why ID? To be able to tell who’s animal is who’s To keep track of vaccinations, medications, and general health To track breeding and progeny

Ear Notching Small triangular chunks taken out of the ear in specific locations that code for numbers Most practical method for swine farms

Ear Tagging Tag with ID number printed on it is inserted through the ear similar to an earring Most practical method for breeding stock and fair identification

Tattooing An alpha numerical tattoo is placed in the ear or inside the lip of the animal Most practical in rabbits and race horses where a tag could easily be removed

Branding Hot iron is placed on the hide of an animal to make a permanent mark Most practical in cattle and some horses

Microchip Small electronic chip inserted into the back of the neck that contains information Most practical in companion animals such as dogs and cats

RFID Tag External tag in the ear with electronic data Most practical in range and research cattle

Collars & Tags Device worn around an animal’s neck with identification information Most practical in companion animals such as dogs and cats
