The Evolution of Mobile Communication Let me put the subject of the course in a historical perspective. For that, nothing better to begin with the image of the inventor of the radio, Giuglemo Marconi. The Evolution of Mobile Communication

Brief History of Mobile Communication Systems 1979: AMPS is introduced in the USA 1981: NMT is introduced in Scandinavia 1982: CEPT creates Group Special Mobile (GSM) 1986: Nine GSM technical proposals are presented 1989: Digital AMPS (DAMPS) is standardized in USA 1991: First GSM networks are launched 1996: IS-95 CDMA is standardized in USA 1997: 200 GSM networks, 109 countries, 44 million users 1998: Five proposals for UMTS radio are presented 1999: ITU-R releases IMT-2000 radio specifications Commercial cellular systems begun operation in 1979. In 20 years, several important milestones have been reached. September 18 Raul Bruzzone

Spreading of Multimedia Services During the 90’s, Internet became a public service with widespread consumer acceptance (More than 1 million Internet subscribers in France). In addition to Text and Fixed Images, Internet provides audio and video. For example: Real Audio CuSeeMee Video Conference In parallel to the evolution of cellular radio, another major communication network succeeded in capture public success: Internet. Initially, it was e-mail, ftp and telnet. But recently, multimedia applications like Real Audio, CuSee-Mee and Net-Meeting are increasingly used. September 18 Raul Bruzzone

Conclusions Following the success of analog and digital mobile communication services, the next step is centered on High-speed Wireless Internet and Multi-media Services 3G networks are the support for this new generation of Mobile Services Many Telecom Operators and Manufacturers have realised that, in the near future, Cellular and Multimedia technology will merge. Third Generation Mobile Systems are the answer to this need. September 18 Raul Bruzzone

Relative Characteristics of Communication Systems MOBILITY MOBILE PORTABLE As a final remark on this block, it is interesting to compare the main characteristics of Third Generation Mobile Communication Systems with respect to other mobile and fixed communication systems. Two parameters are used for this comparison: User Data Rate, ranging from a few Kbps to tens of Mbps. Degree of Mobility, from fixed User to High-Speed Trains. As may be seen, Third Generation Networks provide the same traffic capacity of narrow-band ISDN with the degree of mobility of GSM or IS95-B (also called cdmaOne). FIXED DATA RATE 9.6 Kbps 2 Mbps September 18

Relative Characteristics of Communication Systems MOBILITY MOBILE PORTABLE In addition to the Plain Old Telecommunication Systems (POTS) based on analogue technology, the fixed networks are mainly based on Narrow-band and Wideband Integrated Services Digital Networks (ISDN). ISDN B-ISDN FIXED DATA RATE 9.6 Kbps 2 Mbps September 18

Relative Characteristics of Communication Systems MOBILITY Second Generation MOBILE CORDLESS PORTABLE Present mobile networks may be classified as: Cellular Networks, providing high mobility at a low data rate. Cordless Networks, like DECT or PHS, providing data rate up to several hundred Kbps, but limited to cells of hundreds of meters range. ISDN B-ISDN FIXED DATA RATE 9.6 Kbps 2 Mbps September 18

Relative Characteristics of Communication Systems MOBILITY Third Generation (IMT-2000) Second Generation MOBILE CORDLESS PORTABLE Third Generation Networks will provide the same traffic capacity of narrow-band ISDN with the degree of mobility of GSM or IS95-B (also called cdmaOne). ISDN B-ISDN FIXED DATA RATE 9.6 Kbps 2 Mbps September 18

Relative Characteristics of Communication Systems MOBILITY Third Generation (IMT-2000) Second Generation MOBILE MBS CORDLESS WLAN PORTABLE As a final remark on this block, it is interesting to compare the main characteristics of Third Generation Mobile Communication Systems with respect to other mobile and fixed communication systems. Two parameters are used for this comparison: User Data Rate, ranging from a few Kbps to tens of Mbps. Degree of Mobility, from fixed User to High-Speed Trains.
