Ecological Succesion. Succession n Do ecosystems ever change? n Were there ALWAYS forests? n SUCCESSION is the name given to a predictable series of changes.
How does ecological succession lead to a stable environment? By Salma R.
The environment is constantly changing as a result of human disturbances, like farming and construction, or natural disturbances, like fires, tsunamis,

How Ecosystems Change Ecosystems are constantly changing.
Bare rock is exposed due to some type of disturbance like a retreating glacier or volcanic eruption. No soil is present. Pioneer species, like lichens.
Students will describe how a system reaches equilibrium. Students will be able to describe primary and secondary succession. Objective:

Ecological Succession Notes Ecosystems are constantly changing in response to natural and human disturbances. As an ecosystem changes, older inhabitants.
The gradual, sequential regrowth of a community of species in an area is called ecological succession. You can see early stages of succesion in vacant.

Presentation transcript:

Ecological Succession- Natural, gradual changes in the types of species that live in an ecosystem. Equilibrium- The sense of balance present in living and non-living systems.

Primary Succession Establishment of a community of living organisms in an area where there was no life. Example: volcanic eruption Pioneer species: lichens Secondary Succession Establishment of new species after a disturbance. Example: fire, hurricane, logging, agriculture Pioneer species: grasses
