Algebra Can be summed up in 3 words: Variables Expressions Equations

Algebra Variable – it represents a number, any number (F – 32) * 5/9 = E = MC2

TERM – a number, a variable, or a product of numbers and variables ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSION – a mathematical phrase involving at least one variable and sometimes numbers and operation symbols. No = sign! COEFFICIENT – a number multiplied by a variable in an algebraic expression or equation.

VARIABLE – A letter or symbol used to represent a number. CONSTANT – a quantity or term that does not change its value. It does not have a variable. EVALUATE – to find the value of an expression by replacing each variable in the expression with numbers. (ie find the answer)

Rules of Equality Addition Subtraction Multiplication Division DO THE SAME THING ON BOTH SIDES OF THE EQUAL SIGN.

Addition A + 5 5 + A B + 5 = 12 5 + B = 12 Use the Subtraction Rule of Equality

Subtraction H – 7 7 - H H – 7 = 2 7 – H = 2 Use the Addition Rule of Equality

Multiplication 5G G5 (very rarely used) 5G = 30 Use the Division Rule of Equality

Division P/6 6/P P/6 = 3 6/P = 3 Use the Multiplication Rule of Equality

One-step equations Y + 7 = 10 L – 6 = 2 4F = 20 M/5 = 4 24/N = 3 Remember your Rules of Equality
