MEDICAL WASTE MANAGEMENT

Methods Used to Dispose and Manage Medical Waste Medical waste needs to be managed and disposed in the right manner to avoid, A breakout of diseases and Pollution of Land, Air and Water resources.

The Methods that are used to treat medical waste before it is disposed are Incineration Autoclaves Mechanical and Chemical Disinfection Microwave Radiation Irradiation Vitrification

Incineration Incineration is the controlled burning of medical waste in an incinerator. This process reduces the volume of waste, and sterilizes the wastes. Incinerated waste could be dumped in a landfill. The disadvantage of this process is the pollution that might arise from emissions that are generated during incineration.

An autoclave is a chamber where medical instruments are sterilized by applying heat, pressure or steam on them. The same is done to medical waste to kill microorganisms before they are disposed.

Mechanical equipment such as crushers and milling machines are used to reduce the volume of waste. Medical waste is then disinfected with the use of chlorine compounds to kill microorganisms.

This is the process of exposing hospital waste to gamma rays that destroys bacteria and any living cells.

VITRIFICATION Solid waste is mixed when glass is being produced. The high temperatures that are used in the manufacture of glass burns certain waste materials and the remaining waste is concealed in glass, making it safe for disposal at a landfill.
