Reading Section The New SAT

Components The New SAT has one Reading section. Included: 5 passages and 52 questions Time: 65 minutes (10-11 minutes per passage) Score: 200-800

Types of Passages Genre: Literary or Informative Subjects: US and World Literature (1 passage) History and Social Studies (2 passages) Science (2 passages) Types: Single or Dual

Dual Passages Will always be two informational passages related to the same topic. Three Different Types: Different opinions on the topic Different information about the topic One passage with a general view of the topic and one passage with a specific view

Informational Graphics Will be included in two passages Types: Tables Graphs Charts

Types of Questions Information and Ideas/Summarizing: “What did the author say?” fetching information directly from the text, cause and effect, compare and contrast Rhetoric: “Why did the author say that?” Word choice, text structure, point of view, purpose, arguments Synthesis: Tables, charts, graphs **Paired Questions: General vs. Specific
