Victoria Morris LIZ JONES National Professional Qualifications Information Session Victoria Morris LIZ JONES LJ

Aims To give an overview of the content of the new NPQs To outline the structure of the WAM courses and the assessment procedures Take any questions LJ

The New NPQs Overhauled to reflect current educational landscape Change in type of providers being used LJ Previous NPQs made no mention of MATs or academies or free schools. It also didn’t mention the new curriculum or assessment without levels. Sessions were mostly delivered by companies and a criticism was that many of the facilitators, although very experienced, didn’t have up-to-date knoweldge of what was happening in schools.

NPQML and SL NPQML- for those that are, or are aspiring to be, a middle leader with responsibility for leading a team NPQSL- for leaders that are, or are aspiring to be, a senior leader with cross-school responsibilities VM NPQML- Aspiring middle leaders, Recently appointed middle leaders, Curriculum team leaders, Year group/key stage leaders, Pastoral leaders, SENDCos, Aspiring SLEs NPQSL- An experienced middle leader, A recently appointed deputy headteacher, An assistant headteacher, An SLE, Teaching school alliance leads, Other leaders who have or aspire to have whole school responsibilities If you pass, you have achieved a nationally recognised leadership qualification that will follow you through your career. If you aspire to headship in the future, having done NPQML/SL makes the NPQH easier to engage with.

NPQ Content Areas Strategy and improvement Teaching and curriculum excellence Leading with impact Working in partnership Managing resources and risks Increasing capability VM Strategy and improvement- analysing and evaluating progress, implementing change Teaching and Curriculum Excellence- Grow evidence-based teaching, improving progress, attainment and behaviour Leading with Impact- leadership styles, communication and gathering views Working in Partnership- collaboration at all levels, supporting teams Managing resources and risks- deploying staff, managing finances, ensuring a safe environment Increasing capability- Holding others to account, recognising strengths and weaknesses, professional development for staff

NPQ Leadership Behaviours Commitment Collaboration Personal drive Resilience Awareness Integrity Respect VM

Structure of the course Both NPQs: 360 review ½ day induction 6 face-to-face days Online learning ½ day coaching available 1 school project 1 written assignment 100% of the coaching and facilitation will be carried out by currently practising leaders. LJ Headteacher and senior leader coaches (not the people facilitating the course, but you can get advice from them too.) Example coaches- NLEs Jon Mason, Alan Rosen for senior leadership

Project and Assignment Projects must last at least 2 terms: NPQML- lead a school improvement project within your team, aimed at improving pupil progress (part A) and team capability (part B) NPQSL- lead a school improvement project across the school, aimed at reducing variation in pupil progress and attainment (part A) and improving the efficiency and effectiveness of teaching (part B) LJ For aspiring middle leaders who are not directly responsible for a team (curriculum team or year group for eg)- you need to agree with your HT or senior leader (internal coach) what team or middle leader you will attach yourself to. For aspiring senior leaders, you will need to be attached to a senior leader to enable you to deliver a whole school project (might be your sponsor). Projects should be linked to your school improvement plan- an early conversation is advised. Bear in mind it’s going across two academic years due to the start date. You may also want to discuss with your HT the possible implications on your time.

How will I be assessed? By written assignment with sponsor comments: NPQML- 4500 words max plus evidence NPQSL- 5000 words max plus evidence You will need a senior leader to act as your in-school coach for your project. LJ Assignments are assessed against DfE criteria (same at any provider). Your assignments are anonymised and assessed by staff who have not facilitated any sessions.

Coach? Sponsor? Sponsor- Headteacher/principal Internal coach- leader you are working directly with in school (can be HT) External coach- Leader provided by us for coaching sessions
