IMPORTANCE OF CALCIUM A primary component of bones and teeth Required for muscle and nerve activity Adequate calcium and vitamin D status must be maintained to prevent bone loss

CALCIUM DEFICIENCIES Poorly mineralized and weak bones Leads to Osteoporosis in adulthood Rickets in children Osteomalacia Rickets in adults Stunted growth in children Convulsions and muscle spasms

OSTEOPOROSIS A condition in which low bone density or weak bone structure leads to an increased risk of bone fracture.
