More on Moralism and Character Peter Fitch, St. Croix Vineyard Sunday, September 21, 2014

Reaching down, lifting up . . .

John 4:1-26 13 Jesus answered and said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again; 14 but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him shall never thirst; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life.” 15 The woman said to Him, “Sir, give me this water, so I will not be thirsty nor come all the way here to draw.” 16 He said to her, “Go, call your husband and come here.”

Last week . . . The Listening Waterfall: Jesus speaks of a deeper kind of water; then He drinks from it to demonstrate that He knows this woman We can all do this—God’s love is flowing around each person; if you quiet your heart you can learn to listen We also spoke a little about the difference between moralism and character

Another story . . . John 8:1-11 1 But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. 2 Early in the morning He came again into the temple, and all the people were coming to Him; and He sat down and began to teach them. 3 The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman caught in adultery, and having set her in the center of the court, 4 they said to Him, “Teacher, this woman has been caught in adultery, in the very act.

John 8:1-11 5 Now in the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women; what then do You say?”6 They were saying this, testing Him, so that they might have grounds for accusing Him. But Jesus stooped down and with His finger wrote on the ground. 7 But when they persisted in asking Him, He straightened up, and said to them, “He who is without sin among you, let him be the first to throw a stone at her.”

John 8:1-11 8 Again He stooped down and wrote on the ground. 9 When they heard it, they began to go out one by one, beginning with the older ones, and He was left alone, and the woman, where she was, in the center of the court. 10 Straightening up, Jesus said to her, “Woman, where are they? Did no one condemn you?” 11 She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said, “I do not condemn you, either. Go. From now on sin no more.”

Moralism Black and white Rigid understanding of legal requirements Often people say to me, “But Jesus did tell the woman to go and sin no more!” It’s like He lets her off the hook this time but He demands something better in the future

Vision of Character I think God meets people with love and acceptance wherever they are, whatever they are doing, if they begin to turn their hearts toward Him I think He begins to make souls feel loved and He gives them a vision of their best self It’s not about fitting a grid of right and wrong as much as it about a new direction, a desire to love God and do good

Examples My friend who works with Hispanic gangs and convicts on the west coast He often leads drug-dealers to Christ He doesn’t tell them that they have to stop the only livelihood they know; instead, He begins to teach them how to hear God in the Bible How different the early missionaries or the hair-cut churches!

What does Jesus Mean? In the context, He is saving a woman’s life It seems unlikely that He would end His time with her with a warning What if He is continuing His kindness to her? In that case, perhaps He is saying, “Honey, you don’t need to do this anymore . . .”

Let’s listen to the Waterfall What do you think God would want to say to her? What does she need to know? Now, listen for one more person—someone who is in your life today
