Probeware 101

Two Main Companies Vernier: www.vernier.com Software is LoggerPro and is available in the software center Pasco: www.pasco.com Software is DataStudio and is available in the software center

Examples of probeware Motion detector Force pH ORP Colorimeter Spectrometer Temperature Current voltage O2 CO2 Dissolved oxygen Heart rate Gas pressure Accelerometer Light Conductivity Magnetic field

Vernier Probeware

Data Collection Interfaces Standalone or with computer Computer required LabQuest LabQuest 2 LabQuest Mini Go!Link LabPro

Logger Pro Three main ways you can collect data Time Based Experiment runs for a set amount of time and collects data as frequently as you tell it to Most common method of data collection Events with entry Only “keeps” certain data points when you tell it to Never click “stop” until the experiment is over Useful for titrations or with colorimeter You enter values for one data column (such as volume) Selected events A data point is saved any time the keep button is clicked

Vernier Lab Books Vernier publishes a variety of lab books. When a school buys the book, they also get electronic copies that are editable

PASCO Probeware

Data Collection Interfaces StandAlone or with computer Computer required SPARK AirLink SPARKLink Air

PASCO combo probeware PASCO makes several combo probes Chemistry probe does pH, voltage, temperature, and absolute gas pressure

Data Studio DataStudio is an old, unsupported software The first time someone tries to use it on an HCPS computer, someone with admin rights must log in PASCO offers a newer software (Capstone) but it is too expensive for us to support PASCO is the best product for physics, but is lacking in some other areas

Pasco Lab Books PASCO also makes lab books that come with editable, electronic copies

Care and feeding of probeware Always store pH, ORP, and O2 sensors upright pH and ORP sensors must stay wet Distilled water is OK for short term storage, but long term they must be kept in the appropriate solution (see Vernier website for directions on how to make new solutions) If probes get dried out, they can sometimes be “shocked” into working again All probes come with a manual with usage and storage instructions Gas pressure comes with super useful accessories Vernier makes a variety of adapters for legacy probeware
