Solving Systems Using Matrices

Setting Up a Matrix When we solve systems using matrices, we must align the x and y variables. Then we take the coefficients of each variable Example: 5x + 3y = 6 2x – 8y = 2

What is a Matrix? A set of numbers arranged in rows and columns Example: We name a matrix based on the number of rows X the number of columns

To Actually Solve Using Matrices To solve a matrix for x and y, we put it in the calculator. Steps: 1. Hit ALPHA, ZOOM 2. Enter number of rows/columns 3. Hit OK 4. Type values into matrix 5. To solve, raise the entire matrix to -1 (x-1 key under MATH key) then multiply by answer matrix

Example What is the x coordinate of the following system of equations? 4x +3y = 3 2x + y =-3
