Electrical Vocabulary

CONDUCTOR Material that allows electricity to Flow easily through it. What are some other materials that are great conductors? Wire is made of metal and is a great conductor.

Examples of conductors include metals such as gold and copper, water and the human body.

What are some other materials that are great insulators? A material that resists the free flow of electrons from atom to atom and molecule to molecule. What are some other materials that are great insulators? The plastic casing that goes over the wire is an insulator.

Examples of insulators include plastics, Styrofoam, paper, rubber, glass, and wood.

Conductors & Insulators Continued The division of materials into the categories of conductors and insulators is a somewhat artificial division. It is more appropriate to think of materials as being placed somewhere along a continuum. Materials known as superconductors would be placed at one end and the least conductive materials (best insulators) would be placed at the other end.

through a material from NEGATIVE CURRENT The flow of electrons through a material from NEGATIVE to POSITIVE!

a break in the path of an electric circuit. OPEN CIRCUIT A broken circuit; a break in the path of an electric circuit.

CLOSED CIRCUIT An unbroken circuit; unbroken path of conductors through which electric current flows.

SWITCH A device for making, breaking, or changing the connections in an electrical circuit.

Uninterrupted connection or flow of electrons. Continuity Uninterrupted connection or flow of electrons.

BATTERY A device that produces electrical energy by a chemical reaction. We are using a 9-Volt battery for our “Cyborg”.

LED Light Emitting Diode. A semiconductor that emits light when current flows through it.

RESISTOR Used to control the current in an electric circuit. We are using (1) 220 Ohm resistor in our project.

VOLTAGE A MEASURE OF THE FORCE WITH WHICH ELECTRIC CURRENT IS PUSHED THROUGH WIRES. electron Wire
