Questions to ask What learning aids have/do you use? What have you struggled with the most since your brain injury? Is there anything you wish you could have had to help your rehabilitation?

What is a TBI? Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is an injury to the brain caused by a trauma to the head. Most common form of brain injury. TBI is caused by a trauma rather than a disease. There are many possible causes of a TBI such as falls or road accidents. 700,000 people visit A&E departments in the UK every year with a head injury. 140,000 of those will be admitted for treatment. There are approximately 1million people in the UK currently living with the long term effects of a brain injury. One of the consequences of brain injury is that the person often does not realize that a brain injury has occurred. They lose some fundamental part of their selves.

Different affects of a TBI? 2 types of trauma: External events- Something that has hit the brain. Internal events- Tumour Memory Communication Writing Reading Speaking Listening Interrupting Talking out of turn Speaking rudely Unable to recognise objects/shapes Unable to visualise images Unable to plan towards a goal

Psychological behavior Depression- many things are lost forever especially skills (cooking, working, driving and shopping). Frustrating- slow rate of recovery from injury. Irritability- noises that irritate them and they lose concentration. Anxiety- distrusted by thee changes to their personality. Impulsivity- speak and act without thinking of the consequences. Disinhibition- loss over control of behaviour. Personality change- losing a sense of their own identify is frightening. Loss of initiative- unaware of their difficulties. These can sometimes approve over time.

Revised brief To design a mature learning aid for someone who has suffered a TBI (traumatic brain injury) that can be re-used once the topic has been learnt.
