AIDS project for grades 10 - 12 Am I affected by AIDS

Learning Outcomes Language – LO3: Writing and Presenting AS 11.3.1 The learner is able to demonstrate planning skills for writing for a specific purpose, audience and context. Life Orientation – LO2: Citizenship Education AS 11.2.1 The learner is able to participate in a community service that addresses a contemporary social or environmental issue, indicating how it can harm certain sectors of society more than others (e.g. HIV and AIDS, environmental degradation).

Background AIDS is recognized as one of the worst epidemics the world is facing Many people suffer from the disease There is no cure yet and many people die Children are left homeless Families are destroyed Must we accept this situation or is there something we can do?

Project Tasks Read newspaper articles on AIDS? Join in discussion on how AIDS affects us Research and define the concept of AIDS and go in search of causes and solutions. Team members must look at all social and cultural aspects to develop a balanced understanding of AIDS in South Africa, and come up with a strategy to combat the pandemic. Present your findings and conclusions at a public meeting with other learners

Assessment You will be assessed collectively and individually? Timeframes You will need to do thorough research, collect facts, work together as a group but also give individual inputs, complete your assessment forms, and prepare a final presentation using 3 class periods
