Introduce yourself, any other faculty/support staff, and/or on-site staff Welcome

Housing Information Review important information regarding rules, policies, and safety/security information about the program housing Indicate where students may do laundry, cook, access internet etc. If you are not living in the same residence as the students, let the students know who the contact person is in their residence should something arise

Emergency Response Plan Review your program’s emergency response plan and procedure for communication in an emergency Let students know where to meet for various levels/types of emergencies (ie: emergency in residence, meet at point #1; emergency during class, meet at point #2, emergency while in city, meet at point #3)

Site-Specific Health & Safety Info. Provide students with site-specific information about potential health and safety dangers Petty theft (pickpocketing) versus violent theft Local scams “No-go” areas Going out at night Male/Female concerns in host culture Travel in groups/don’t let anyone leave with anyone they meet by themselves Stay away from demonstrations and protests Water safety information for those locations near water (review tips in part 5 of your faculty director handbook)

Local Laws and ASU Policy Remind students that they must adhere to local laws Remind students that they are subject to the ASU Code of Student Conduct and ASU guidelines on alcohol use

General Program Schedule/Itinerary Review the calendar/itinerary of the program with the students, including any planned excursions and weekends that students will have free Remind students that when traveling on weekends they are required to leave an itinerary with you with contact information

Host Culture Information Discuss information students will need to know about the host culture/country (ie: brief important historical facts; current events that students might need to be aware of, useful words and phrases) Outline behaviors that are offensive to the host culture and cultural norms or expectations (gift giving and other customary practices) Discuss laws that students needs to be aware of for the host country (ie: drinking laws, drugs) ‘Know Your Hosts’ questionnaire is a good template that you can use to think through the different information you may wish to share with your students about the host culture.

Culture Shock and Cultural Competency Discuss the process of culture shock including the phases that most students will go through: honeymoon period, rejection and criticism, regression and isolation, adjustment and adaptation. Let students know that they should feel free to talk with you throughout the process. Remind them to not hang out with their peers exclusively and to make every attempt to interact with people of the host culture.

Finances While Abroad Money and safety Let students know the best ways to access their funds while abroad (ATMs, credit cards, cash?) Money and safety Where to store money, etc.

Communication While Abroad Let students know the options they will have to stay in touch with family and others on the program while abroad (access to phones in residence, local cell phones, calling cards, Skype) Remind students of the time difference Remind students to notify family that they have arrived on the program start date
