Presentation transcript:

The Three Teachings It is difficult for "western" people to understand that these are NOT religions. Instead, they are philosophies. The people of China do not believe in a "higher being" or "supernatural power". Rather, they focus on order. Each of the three teachings is unique in helping to maintain order and structure in both society and in one’s personal life.

Buddhism Siddhartha Gautama was the founder of Buddhism. He became the “Enlightened One/Awakened One” only after he discovered the Four Noble Truths. Buddhists live life in moderation. They take and use only what they need.

Buddhism A mandala is a symbolic picture of the universe. It represents an imaginary palace that is contemplated during meditation. Each object in the palace has significance. The mandala's purpose is to help transform ordinary minds into enlightened ones and to assist with the healing of the universe.

Taoism/Daoism Lao Zi was a Taoist god and he is thought to be the person who started Taoism. Taoists believe people should sit back and let nature take its course, what ever is going to happen, will happen.

Taoism/Daoism Taoism provided a different way of looking at the world. Lao Zi did not believe worldly riches and high offices were important. Taoism means “the way.” Taoism provided a different way of looking at the world.

Taoist/Daoist Symbol The Tai- Chi or Yin-Yang is used to illustrate balance in a person’s life. Opposites that create one whole.

Confucianism Confucius was a great Chinese thinker and philosopher. His ideas are the core of Confucianism. He believed in good moral conduct.

Confucianism Confucius believed the key to happiness was a good education. He also felt helping others was a natural result of a good education. He felt education taught ren or benevolence (kindness) and that it was the most important quality in a person. Confucius thought if everyone from the ruler down were people of integrity, then success would follow.

Confucianism His thoughts and writings, and stories about his life form the book called the Analects. Confucius did not start a religion. He saw himself as a teacher gave knowledge of the past to the people in the present.

Confucius says… Everything has its beauty, but not everyone sees it. Respect yourself and others will respect you. Do not impose on others what you yourself do not desire. Forget injuries, never forget kindnesses. Before you embark on a journey of revenge, dig two graves.
