2 Where did Buddhism originate?

3 How old is Buddhism? 2,500 years old

4 Who founded Buddhism? Buddhism arose as a result of Siddhartha Gautama's quest for Enlightenment in around the 6th Century BC

5 The story of Siddhartha Gautama
Lived about BCE (but more recent research suggests that he lived around BCE until circa 410 BCE) He was born into a royal family.

6 The story of Siddhartha Gautama
One day, Siddhartha went outside the royal enclosure where he lived. When he went outside he saw the suffering of the world.

Siddhartha also saw a monk. He decided to leave his protected royal life and live as a homeless holy man.

Ultimately, Siddhartha pursued the “Middle Way” This means he pursued a balanced life.

One day, seated beneath the Bodhi tree Siddhartha became deeply absorbed in meditation. He finally achieved Enlightenment and became the Buddha.

10 What is Enlightenment? When someone discovers the truth about life and ends their cycle of reincarnation.

1. EVERYONE KNOWS SUFFERING AND PAIN 2. PEOPLE SUFFER BECAUSE OF THEIR DESIRES  3. SUFFERING CAN BE ENDED BY GETTING RID OF DESIRES  4. DESIRES CAN BE ELIMINATED BY FOLLOWING THE EIGHTFOLD PATH TO ENLIGHTENMENT.

14 What’s the ultimate goal of Buddhists?
Become Enlightened and achieve Nirvana Nirvana = Freedom from the cycle of reincarnation

There are currently million followers in the world

16 Does Buddhism include the worship of a god?
There is no set belief in a personal God. Buddhism is about a relationship with yourself.

17 How did Buddhism spread?
Asoka - a ruthless Indian leader. Saw the destruction of war. Decided to follow the teachings of Buddha. He sent out missionaries (priests) to promote the religion. Buddhism spread from India into China and later to other parts of Asia.
