Calculating Stored Carbon in ‘Our Dear Green Place’ Physical Geography Project Calculating Stored Carbon in ‘Our Dear Green Place’
Introduction Kelvingrove Park, quadrat 2 (100x100m) 10.10.11 Purpose – To calculate the carbon stored within trees amongst our quadrant The amount of carbon in urban landscapes previously been unquantified
Method Equipment used – Handheld GPS, measuring tape, surveying pole, map, data table Assigned each tree a unique id Located the tree using the gps and plotted this on the map Measured circumference of the tree trunk at 1.4m height Overall we measured 68 trees
Results and Interpretation average carbon/tree (Kg) = 766.51 average CO2 sequestered/tree (Kg) = 2813.10 Total Stored Carbon = 52122.91kg Total CO2 sequestered = 191291.08kg
Results and Interpretation Equations used based on Martin et al: log10M=-1.25+2.66xlog10D Here M = dry mass and D = diameter of tree trunk at 1.4m high 45% of dry mass of trees comes from carbon Each kg of dried tree stores 0.45kg of C, it removes 1.65kg of CO2 from the atmosphere.
Discussion Relevance of a local study on a global scale Glasgow’s known as the greenest city in the UK Comparison to other green urban areas – Pollock Park. Comparison to other global carbon sinks – Amazon Advantages of protecting carbon storage
Conclusion Total amount of carbon stored in the 68 trees measured - 52122.91kg Limitations of field study Significance of urban carbon sinks Contrast between urban carbon storage and rural carbon storage
