Presentation transcript:

Class Careers is a social enterprise company that seeks to enable equal access to careers information for all schools across the country regardless of status or location. We do this by bringing employers and students together in the classroom via on-line chat, giving students the opportunity to ask any questions they may have and eliminating costs to schools in terms of time and money spent on visits off site.

EVER FELT A BIT UNSURE WHAT TO DO NEXT? We’re pretty certain all these professionals felt unsure at some point in their journey too.     And that’s OK. We want to help make your next steps feel a little less uncertain

MAKING DECISIONS When you have completed your GCSEs you have some choices to make. You have to stay in some form of education or training until you are 18, but it doesn’t have to be in school. You could go to college, start a traineeship or apprenticeship or do part-time work with training. Post 16 is a key stage of transition for students and we believe they should all be fully aware of all the options that are available to them. The following slides give an overview of the pathways. Of course, don’t forget to remind them of the traditional pathway of A Levels - traditional but not the best for every student!

THIS SESSION IS AN OPPORTUNITY TO FIND OUT ABOUT THE APPRENTICESHIP ROUTE

So you can make the best decision for your future. WHY IS THIS USEFUL? There are plenty of options for you after you leave school or college. We want you to know more about what exactly is on offer. University isn’t the only option available to students. Many organisations offer apprenticeships with an exciting variety of employers, so that they can start work straight away, or even earn as they study at university. It is important to ensure students are making the right option choices at key stages of transition and are aware of the standard that will be required for entry onto the various schemes. So you can make the best decision for your future.

DURING THIS SESSION YOU WILL: Learn more about what an apprenticeship is and find out if this is a suitable route for you Find out about some opportunities available to you There will be volunteers from a range of companies offering apprenticeships. It is far more beneficial if students come to the session with prepared questions. Chat directly to a current apprentice or employer who can give you an insight into the apprenticeship route

SO HERE ARE SOME OPTIONS Post 16 Pathways - a broad outline Traineeship Intermediate Apprenticeship Advanced Apprenticeship Higher Apprenticeship Degree Apprenticeship Typical Entry Requirements No formal ones. willingness to work, enthusiasm 2 or more GCSEs (grades 9-4). APPRENTICESHIPS - WHAT ARE THEY? An apprenticeship gives you: Hands-on experience A salary The opportunity to gain qualifications while you work

WHO ARE THEY FOR? You can do an apprenticeship if you are: 16 or over by the end of the summer holidays Living in England* Not in full-time education *Different departments deal with apprenticeships if you live in Wales or Scotland, but basic eligibility criteria are the same. Basic eligibility criteria are the same for all three countries, but check full details relating to where your school is based www.apprentices.scot or http://gov.wales/topics/educationandskills/skillsandtraining/apprenticeships/?lang=en

WHAT IF I DON’T HAVE THE RIGHT QUALIFICATIONS FOR AN APPRENTICESHIP? You can do a Traineeship. This will give you the skills and experience to prepare you to apply for an apprenticeship. You will have work experience and extra help with Maths English and IT if necessary

HERE’S A LITTLE VIDEO TO GIVE YOU A FLAVOUR OF WHAT APPRENTICESHIPS ARE ALL ABOUT …. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n4qA3pd5xNA

SO WHAT DO YOU WANT TO FIND OUT? GROUP ACTIVITY You will shortly connect to someone who can give you an insight into the apprenticeship route. Have a think about the questions you want to ask. We suggest working in small groups so your students spend some time preparing some questions to ask.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS How often do I need to attend college? How much will I get paid? Will I have a job at the end? What’s the application process? What grades and skills do I need? Is there support available? What are the benefits? Where will I be based?

HOW DO I FIND AN APPRENTICESHIP? Most Apprenticeships are advertised on the government apprenticeships website www.getingofar.gov.uk You can register for free and create an account. This will allow you to apply for apprenticeships, track your application and receive alerts about new opportunities. If time allows, let students look at this site. They can search by categories or geographical area.

HELP US IMPROVE OUR SERVICE By filling in both the pre and post-chat surveys, we’ll be able to improve our offer for other students just like you. Please encourage students to fill in the post-chat survey and not to just close the window once they have finished! This will indefinitely improve our service and allow us to feedback valuable information to our clients. Please ensure to take five minutes at the end of the chat to answer the survey questions.
