Ms. Hubbard 5th Grade Topic 1 DIVIDING 101 Ms. Hubbard 5th Grade Topic 1

FIRST STEP: MSBD MOST STUDENTS BRING DINOSAURS M MULITPLY S SUBTRACT B BRING DOWN D DIVIDE BY FOLLOWING THESE STEPS DIVISION SHOULD BE AS EASY AS ABC..123…

MSBD STEP 1: MULTIPLY 5 155 ASK YOURSELF… What # multiplied by 5 gives you 15? 03 (don’t forget the zero) Now multiply 5 x 3 and place the answer below the 15. Onto Step 2… 0 3 5 155

STEP 2: SUBTRACT MSBD 0 3 Once you have place your answer to (5x3=15) under the 15, the next step is to add the subtraction sign. Subtract the problem 15-15 Your answer is 0 5 155 -15

STEP 3: BRING DOWN MSBD 0 3 Next step in our procedure is to BRING DOWN the next number. The next number would be the last 5 in 155. Drop the number (as shown) right next to the 0. Move to the next step… 5 155 -15 0 5

STEP 4: DIVIDE MSBD 0 3 1 5 155 The next step after you have brought the 5 down next the zero, you must divide. Ask yourself… “How many times does 5 go into 5?” Your answer is one time. You would put your answer (1) on the top line -15 0 5

Am I Finished??? 0 3 1 5 155 You may think “O I’m all done now, YEAH!!” but you are not done until you can not complete the MSBD process. So you would continue on by first Multiplying 5x1=5 Subtract 5-5 Bring Down ??? STOP There is nothing to Bring Down!!! You are not finished because you could not go any further in our MSBD process -15 0 5 -05

Try a few on your own Remember MSBD 1) 280 ÷ 7 2) 186 ÷ 6 3) 180 ÷ 12 Multiply Subtract Bring Down Divide 1) 280 ÷ 7 2) 186 ÷ 6 3) 180 ÷ 12 If you get lost or stuck, click on the problem and it will take you to the answer. But remember try before you give up and click the answer.

280 7 -28 00 - 0 Problem 1 280 ÷ 7 0 4 0 Think 7 x ? = 28 answer is 04 0 4 0 280 -28 00 - 0 Think 7 x ? = 28 answer is 04 Subtract 28-28 = 0 Bring Down the 0 Divide 7 ÷ 0 = 0 Repeat procedure 5) 7x 0 = 0 6) 0-0= 0 7) STOP!!! There is nothing to bring down so you are finished 7

186 6 -18 06 - 6 Problem 2 186 ÷ 6 0 3 1 Think 6 x ? = 18 answer is 03 0 3 1 186 -18 06 - 6 Think 6 x ? = 18 answer is 03 Subtract 18-18 = 0 Bring Down the 6 Divide 6 ÷ 6 = 1 Repeat procedure 5) 6x 1 = 6 6) 6-6= 0 7) STOP!!! There is nothing to bring down so you are finished 6

Problem 3 180 ÷ 12 0 1 5 Think 12 x ? = 18 List the multiples 12 x 1= 12 12 x2= 24 So 12 can go into 18 at least 1 time. So your answer will be 01 Subtract 18-12=06 Bring Down the 0 Divide 60 ÷ 12 = 5 Repeat procedure 5) 12x5=60 6) 60-60=0 7) STOP!!! There is nothing to bring down so you are finished 12 180 -12 060 -60
