Energy Management at DESY and a new Energy Monitoring System 3rd Energy for Sustainable Science Workshop Eva Leister Hamburg, 30.10.2015

Energy Consumption at DESY in 2014

Electricity Flow 2014

Load Profile of a DESY-buliding

Old energy data acquisition Media: electricity, heating (district heating, natural gas), drinking water Purpose: Estimation of power consumption for contract design further accounting of operating costs to other instituts on the campus etc. Meter reading by respective department Disadvantage: Different meters in one building were read by different people Different reading intervals (1-3 month) No unified meter marking Data were stored in different excel files Disadvantage: No unified and centralized data archive

New energy data acquisition Unified meter marking All data are entered to a self developed Excel Tool and are sent to a centralized Oracle database All meters are read by the caretakers All meters are read monthly A part of the meters are directly connected to the database

„Zählertool“ * *Developed by Narcisse Ngada and Eva Leister

„Energieverbrauchstool“ * *Developed by Eva Leister

Energy Monitoring outlook Select a suitable software Installation of meters over the next 5 years Detailed metering of bulidings and large facilities Usage of the data for invoicing the costs to the users (e.g. other institutes) http://www.ecogreen-energie.de

DESY Heating System

“Old“ Heat Recovery Heat Recovery DESY Heating System

“Old“ Heat Recovery Built in 1992 Heatsource: Oil loop of the low pressure compressor of the Cryogenic plant 3 Tube Heat Exchangers Heat Recovery in 2014: 1350 MWh/a ( ca. 3500 MWh/a during the operating period of HERA)

“New“ Heat Recovery Heatsource: Oil loop of the high pressure compressor of the Cryogenic plant Heatsink: Whole DESY Heating System Calculated Heat: ca. 6800 MWh/a (1/3 of DESY heat consumption)

District cooling

New data center with direct Rack cooling

Free Cooling at 20°C-Cooling Systems

Conclusion Large power consumption Expand and professionalize the Energy Monitoring Important: Central coordination of all tasks concerning energy consumption Energy efficiency projects: Heat recovery will supply more than 1/3 of the DESY-Campus District cooling with a high security of supply Direct rack cooling in the data center Free Cooling of 20°C-Cooling Systems Saving energy= Saving money
