1.3/1.7 Properties of Real Numbers & Solving Equations Learning Goals: create equations and inequalities in one variable and use them to solve problems

Real Numbers

Real Numbers…made real!

Real Numbers Assignment Assignment will be posted on edmodo. Essentially, you will create a diagram similar to the one on the previous slide to demonstrate your understanding of the relationship of real numbers in an abstract way. You will have 1 week to submit it.

Vocabulary open sentence : a mathematical sentence containing one or more variables equation: a mathematical sentence stating that two mathematical expressions are equal solution : a replacement value that makes an open sentence true

Vocabulary inverse operation: operation used to undo another operation identity: an equation that is true for every real value of the variable literal equation: an equation that uses at least two different letters as variables

Properties of Real Numbers Property Addition Multiplication

Name the property illustrated by each expression

Multiplicative Inverse Identify the additive inverse and multiplicative inverse for each number. Number Additive Inverse Multiplicative Inverse Ex 3 –7 Ex 4 5 Ex 5 ⅔

Ex 6 Solve the equation. Check your solution.

Ex 7 Solve the equation. Check your solution.

Is the equation sometimes, always, or never true? Ex 8 Ex 9

Ex 10 Solve the equation for x and find any restrictions.

Ex 11 Solve the equation for x and state any restrictions.

Ex 12 Find F in terms of C.

Ex 13 Solve the equation for b.

With your partner discuss the problem. Ex 14 You solve an equation and find that for a school trip you need 4.3 buses for the transportation. Explain how to interpret this solution.
