Building Codes and Hillsdale

How Building/Fire Codes Drive Hardware Design and Certification Codes may specifically designate design/performance criteria such as California Building Code 1008.1.10.1 (3) – “The actuating portion of the releasing device shall extend at least one-half of the door leaf width” 1008.1.10.1 (4) – “The maximum unlatching force shall not exceed 15 pounds (67 N)” 11B-309.4 – “Operable parts shall be operable with one hand and shall not require tight grasping, pinching, or twisting of the wrist. The force required to activate operable parts shall be 5 pounds (22.2 N) maximum.” CBC was directly responsible for the initial development of the AX option for exits Almost all current Allegion NPD projects have some form of ADA compliance as a design requirement

How Building/Fire Codes Drive Hardware Design and Certification Codes may specifically designate industry standards like UL and/or ANSI/BHMA IBC 1010.1.10.1 (1) – “Panic hardware shall be listed in accordance with UL305” IBC 1010.1.10.1 (2) – “Fire exit hardware shall be listed in accordance with UL10C and UL305” CBC 1008.1.4.2 – “Full-power-operated doors shall comply with BHMA A156.10. Power-assisted and low-energy doors shall comply with BHMA A156.19” NFPA 80 – “Continuous hinges shall be labeled and shall meet the requirements of ANSI/BHMA A156.26, American National Standard for Continuous Hinges.” The performance criteria within these standards helps to create design criteria for new products and features
