ASSESSING WRITING PEPI FIDIA, M.Pd

GENRES OF WRITING : Academic Writing (essay, composition, journal, theses ) Job-related Writing (memo, message, report, announcement) Personal Writing ( letter, e mail, greeting card, diary, notes)

Types of Classroom Writing Performance : 1. Imitative, or writing down Intensive, or controlled (guided writing) 3. Self-writing 4. Display writing 5. Real writing

TYPES OF REAL WRITING : Academic Writing Vocational / technical Personal.

Two categories of writing skills : Micro Skills Micro skills of writing are appropriately applied to imitative and intensive types of writing task B. Macro Skills Macro skills writing are essentials for the successful mastery of responsive and extensive writing.

Designing Assessment Tasks : Imitative Writing 1. Task in (hand) Writing Letter, Words, and Punctuation 2. Spelling Tasks and Detecting Phoneme- Grapheme Correspondences

Task in (hand) Writing Letter, Words, and Punctuation : 1. Copying The test-taker reads: Copy the following words in the spaces given 2. Listening cloze selection tasks Test-takers hear : Write the missing words in each blank. Below the story is a list of words to choose from. 3. Picture-cued tasks Familiar pictures are displayed, and test-takers are told to write the word that the picture represents. Form completion tasks. Converting numbers and abbreviations to words

Spelling Tasks and Detecting Phoneme Grapheme Correspondences : Spelling tests Picture-cued tasks Multiple-choice techniques Matching phonetic symbols

Designing Assessment Tasks: Intensive (Controlled) Writing Dictation and Dicto-Comp Grammatical Transformation Tasks. Picture-Cued Tasks

Designing Assessment Task: Responsive and Extensive Writing : Paraphrasing Guided Question and Answer Paragraph Construction Tasks

Scoring Methods for Responsive and Extensive Writing : Holistic Scoring Primary Trait Scoring Analytic Scoring

Advantages of holistic scoring : Fast evaluation. Relatively high inter-rater reliability. The fact that scores represent “standards” that are easily interpreted by lay person. The fact that scores tend to emphasize the writer’s strengths. Applicability to write across many different disciplines.

Disadvantages of holistic scoring : One score masks differences across the sub skills with each score. No diagnostic information is available (no wash back potential). The scale may not apply equally well to all genres of writing. Raters need to be extensively trained to use the scale accurately

THANK YOU !
