The Higher Council for Environment and NaturalResources (HCENR) of the Ministry of Environment and Physical Development is the National Focal Pointfor the Basel Convention. The issue of POPs in Sudan has gained considerable importance in recent years. Awareness raising on POPs has been significantly increased since the ratification of the convention. This is mainly attributed to the efforts exerted by the HCENR through awareness raising programs and projects related to the environmental impacts of chemicals

Sudan is aware that POPs are only a part of the chemical management challenge. Therefore, HCENR is aiming to coordinate different activities on chemical management (POPs, mercury, ozone depleting substances, climate change including short-lived climate pollutants).

Stakeholders for Basel Convention 1. Higher Council for Environment and Natural Resources (HCENR) 2. Ministry of Agriculture/Division of Plant Protection (DPP) and the National Pesticide Council 3. Ministry of Health 4. Ministry of Industry (MOI) 5. Ministry of Electricity and Dams (MED) 6. Customs General Directorate 7. Ministry of Justice 8. Research Centres, Universities and Civil Societies

More simplified practical version shall be developed for stakeholders. Experts in the field of POPs at regional and national level shall be involved to implement and develop strategy for Basel COP resolutions on directives and POPs guidelines for POPs standard management.

Legislations for management of hazardous waste (e Legislations for management of hazardous waste (e.waste, medical, chemical waste) are now implemnted in Khartoum state. A strategy shall be developed for other states soon. A specialized landfill for hazardous waste disposal is now constructed. Extended producer responsibility for hazardous waste is adopted.

More consultation and and technical assistance from experts of Basel Centre for Technology Transfer is needed to complete and review the national report of POPs. Other Challenges of Gold mining and pollution need to be adressed.
