Writing Equations from Words

AT THE END OF TODAY’S CLASS, WE WILL BE ABLE TO… …write an equation from words and solve that equation.

WHAT ARE THE KEY WORDS? Addition Order Changers Multiplication Equation plus, increased by, sum, in all, total, more, combined, together, added to than from to times, product, multiplied, each, of, factors is are was were will be gives yields sold for Subtraction Division minus, subtract, less, decreased by, less, difference, reduced by, fewer divided, quotient, an, in, per, rate, ratio, separate

AN EXAMPLE Four more than twice a number is 8.

Six less than six times a number is 12.

Seven more than twice a number is 1.

Seven more than the quotient of a number and 2 is 10.

Nine more than three times a number is -6.

The diffrence between twice a number and 11 is 23.

The product of a number and 8 is 6 more than 5 times that number.

The quotient of a number and 8 is 7 less than the product of that number and eight.

Five less than four times a number is one more than the product of that number and 3.
