A LANGUAGE TO COMMUNICATE WITH THE WORLD

The future of English is very dynamic, nowadays according to population experts, around 400 million people speak English as their first language. This language is very important that it is a national language and it is considered the global language. The rise of English was first liked to the history of colonialism, but the dominance of the USA after the Second World War ensured that this expansion of English continues The English has been expanding around the world, nowadays is used by communities on all five continents. International organizations have adopted the English for their work and activities. For the future, the world will become multilingual with most people becoming competent in several languages, including English.

Thanks to globalization and technology, English dominates the world as no language ever has and some linguists think that it might become the king of languages. However, some insist that linguistic evolution will continue to take its course over the centuries and that English could eventually die as a common language. Such specialists on the English language as David Crystal, author of "English as a Global Language," say the world has changed so drastically that history is no longer a guide. John McWhorter, a linguist at the Manhattan Institute, said "English is dominant in a way that no language has ever been before." It is the common language in almost every endeavor, from science to air traffic control, and many activities.

The world faces a future of people speaking more than one language, with English no longer seen as likely to become dominant as the global language. The idea of English becoming the world language to the exclusion of others “is past its sell- by date,” said language researcher David Graddol. Instead, it’s major contribution will be in creating new generations of bilingual and multilingual speakers. Stephen Anderson say that it's very important to learn English, politicians and educators need to realize that doesn't mean abandoning the native language, it's only create multi- lingual homes. “There is a distinct consciousness in many countries, both developed and developing, about this dominance of English. There is some evidence of resistance to it, a desire to change it,” Scott Montgomery said. Even when surfing the Internet, there are more web pages in English than any other language.

Although there are countries where people speak different languages, English is still the language global more accepted for the population. Today they are creating new generations who are bilingual, since society has led to learn more than one language to excel in the world. However, although we do not know exactly what will happen with the English, because the world changes over time. We think it is necessary get a language that unite all countries, and the English it has done. Although there are many languages in the world, English has been adopted to many activities such as research, science, economic activities. We believe the English will be included in the education of many countries as an official foreign language for a union of many cultures and countries, and so get speak a universal language.

RATIONALE This article talks about the importance of English in the world and the developments that have taken over time. Is interesting to know that although exist numerous languages; English has become one of the most widely spoken languages at the world, also there are many countries that have accepted as an international language. It should be noted that in the world many businesses are conducted in English, scientific studies and computer systems are written in this language and is used similarly in tourism activities. For this reason, we decided to do this work, which it is specially aimed at university students, with the idea of informing them the importance of learning English, because today is becoming an indispensable tool in the professional field. Also because being a universal language, when they finish their studies and try to enter the workplace, the English will give them access to new job opportunities. To do this article we select and read the following readings: "English - a global language?"
