WHAT DOES THIS ILLUSTRATION SYMBOLISM? WHAT STANDS OUT TO YOU?

CONTEXT: The setting is a society in which aging has been cured, individuals have indefinite lifespans, and population control is used to limit the population of the United States to forty million. This is maintained through a combination of infanticide and government-assisted suicide - in short, in order for someone to be born, someone must first volunteer to die. As a result, births are few and far between, and deaths occur primarily by accident. BECAUSE OF ANTI-GERASONE… THIS IS WHAT SOCIETY HAS COME TO.

IMAGINE A SOCIETY WHERE IN ORDER FOR A BABY TO BE BORN, A PERSON MUST DIE ! 1 BIRTH = 1 DEATH In a world where overpopulation and anti-aging serums are present (very similar to the story Tomorrow, Tomorrow. Population control is emphasized and encouraged through the development of government assisted suicide parlors. For one child to live, a person must volunteer to die.

What population control method would you enact ? Things to Consider: Law Economic Impact Environmental Impact Murder ? Suicide ? Case of Twins, Triplets ** You cannot involve people from prison or the jail system.

ANALYSIS QUESTIONS What is the way this society deals with overpopulation ? How is the 2BR02B (to be or not to be) relevant to the story ? What is the symbolic meaning behind the meaning of the mural that the painter is working on? Find three symbols in the short story and state its symbolic meaning. Duality is an instance of opposition or contrast between two concepts. How is duality present in this short story? What is the painter’s solution to his unhappiness? Why do you think he has changed his mind compared to how he was feeling at the beginning of the story? Does the author seem to think the problem is worse or the solution is worse? What might the author be warning the reader about?
