Parts of the Computer
The parts can be seperated into two categories: Peripherals Internal Components
Peripherals A computer peripheral is any external device that provides input and output for the computer. Ex: A keyboard and mouse are input peripherals, while a monitor and printer are output peripherals. Computer peripherals, or peripheral devices, are sometimes called "I/O devices" because they provide input and output for the computer.
Internal Components Internal components are those that reside inside the computer. Some examples are: Motherboard CPU Memory VideoCards Networks Cards Disk Drives Bus
Motherboards Every part of the computer connects to the motherboard in some way. Some parts are connected directly to it. Others rest on top of it.
Central Processing Unit The central processing unit is the chip in the computer that does most of the processing. It can be divided up into 3 categories Arithemetic Logic Unit Control Unit Registers
CPU (cont)
Memory There are several different types of memory storage devices Hard Drives Floppy Drives ROM (Read only Memory) RAM (Random Access Memory) EPROM (Erasable Programable ROM)
Bus Peripherals and other internal devices are connected to each other by one or more buses. A bus is a common electrical pathway betweeen multiple devices (hardware). Buses can also be dedicated to special purposes such as connecting to memory or to multiple processors.
