One-Step Inequalities Chapter 3 Section 3.1

Objective Students will transform inequalities in order to solve them. Students will also graph the inequality.

Concept When solving inequalities you use the same rules as solving equations. Use the opposite operation that you are given to get the variable alone on one side of the inequality sign.

Concept Opposite Operations Addition and Subtraction Multiplication and Division

Concept When multiplying or dividing each side of the inequality by a negative number you reverse the direction of the sign.

-4 < 3 Multiply by 2 Multiply by -2 Example -4 < 3 Multiply by 2 Multiply by -2

Concept When graphing… < or > - open circle < or > - closed circle

Concept Always put the variable first in the inequality. When the variable comes first, the direction the inequality sign is pointing is the direction you shade when graphing.
