Place Value

Place Value Vocabulary Digit: one of ten symbols (0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9) used to write numbers. Compare: to describe whether one a number is equal to, less than, or greater than another number. Value: how much something is worth. For example, a one dollar bill is worth one dollar, but a ten dollar bill is worth ten dollars.

Place Value Vocabulary Place Value: the value of a digit in a number, based on it’s position. Order: to describe which of a set of numbers is the greatest, which is the least, and where the others fall between them based on their values. Period: a group of three digits in a number

What is the value of the 3 in… 6,389? Think… three is in the hundreds place, and I know that 3x100 = 300, so the value of the 3 is = 300. Now You try!!! 8,639? 3, 986? ***Notice that the VALUE changes, even though the DIGIT stays the same***

When I change a digit in a number, I change the value of the number. Thousands, Hundreds Tens Ones If I want to INCREASE a number by one thousand, I will increase the digit in the thousands place by one. Example: Increase 45,692 by one thousand 5 is in the thousands place, so to increase the number by one thousand I will change the 5 to a 6. The new number is 46,692

ON YOUR FEET!!! Each of you has a digit. Some are on red cards, some are on blue, and some are on green. I will call out a color first, then a number. If you are holding that card decide where you belong on the place value chart. Go and stand there, and hold your number so everyone in the class can see. The rest of the class will check to see if you are correct!

Dice Game Each group has 5 dice and a place value chart. Roll the first die ~ put it in the ones place Roll the second die ~ put it in the tens place Roll the third die ~ put it in the hundreds place Roll the fourth die ~ put it in the thousands place. Roll the fifth die ~ put it in the ten-thousands place. Write the number using digits and then using words. Do this five times to make 5 different numbers.
