Using Standards to Plan Projects Gabby Agapion, Ashlee Gordon (K-5) Ever wonder how it all fits together? We will share our journey into unpacking and integrating standards that fit into PBLs and followed the interests of our 2nd grade students. This process can be applied to other grade levels as well. Teachers need to bring laptops. Room 3630 Sessions 1 & 3

Why did we decide to do this? Subjects weren’t flowing together. If it didn’t make sense to us, it didn’t make sense to the students.

Then, we added other ELA standards. How did we get started? We began with the pacing guide and focused on Science and Social Studies standards. Next we discussed what writing standards would fit with each set of indicators. Then, we added other ELA standards.

Did everything work perfectly? Writing flowed very well with the science or social studies standards. Other ELA standards were trial and error, so we moved things around depending on where the project led.

We use this template in two ways. We used this template as a guideline for projects. We used it as a checklist to ensure that all standards were being taught.

Cultures December 5 – January 13 (weeks 17 – 20) 4 weeks Social Studies Standard 2-4: The student will demonstrate an understanding of cultural contributions made by people from the various regions in the United States. 2-4.1 Recognize the basic elements that make up a cultural region in the United States, including language, beliefs, customs, art, and literature. 2-4.2 Compare the historic and cultural traditions of various regions in the United States and recognize the ways that these elements have been and continue to be passed across generations. 2-4.3 Recognize the cultural contributions of Native American tribal groups, African Americans, and immigrant groups. 2-4.4 Recall stories and songs the reflect the cultural history of various regions in the United States, including stories of regional folk figures, Native American legends, and African American folktales. Reading Comprehension Skills 7.2 Read or listen closely to compare and contrast multiple versions of the same story; compare and contrast texts in author and genre studies. 8.1b. describe how cultural context influences characters, setting, and the development of the plot; and   Vocabulary Skills 11.1 Identify and analyze the author’s purpose. 11.2 Recognize differences between the points of view and perspectives of the narrator and various characters. 9.1 Identify the literary devices of simile and metaphor and sound devices; explain how the author uses each. Writing Standard 3: Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective techniques, well-chosen details, and well-structured event sequences. 3.1 Explore multiple texts to write narratives that recount a well-elaborated event or short sequence of events; include details to describe actions, thoughts, and feelings; use temporal words to signal event order; and provide a sense of closure. 3.2 Plan, revise, and edit, focusing on a topic while building on personal ideas and the ideas of others to strengthen writing. Grammar 4.2 Form and use frequently occurring irregular plural nouns. 5.2b. commas in greetings and closings of letters, dates, and to separate items in a series

How did we use this? Because the standards were more organized and easier to think about as a whole, we were better able to brainstorm the best kind of PBL that could organically form from the standards that needed to be taught.

Then, find ELA standards that would also fit. Now, it’s your turn! We have provided a template that includes one science and one social studies group of standards. Use your standards to find one ore more writing standards that could be covered alongside either your science standards or your social studies standards. Then, find ELA standards that would also fit.
